I would like to start this thread to discuss services that offer a third party merchant account. There are two services that we have used ourselves and are very happy with:
(i) 2checkout.com and
(ii) ccnow.com
Are there any other services like that? Please list those services and your experience with them. Thank you!

Sam,
2checkout.com has been a lot of trouble for many users. I've never used it myself, so I can't comment in how good or bad they are.
In the meantime, I would like to add:
(iii) PaySystems.com
to your list. :)

Yes PaySystems.com is a good solution as well. I found another one that allows you to accept credit cards even for your offline customers (i.e. over the phone etc.). It is called ProPay

I understand ClickBank.com is very good as well specially when you are selling digital goods such as ebooks, software etc.

Actually if you are discussing as a web hosting company, then, it is good to use a third party processor but for eCommerce merchants they should and MUST use direct merchant accounts and so far Wells Fargo has been one of the best and then BOFA has been great so far.

I believe there are lot of small to medium sized businesses that cannot afford the high costs of getting their own merchant account plus the high monthly cost of maintaining the account. I believe the 3rd party merchants play a great role in allowing anyone to start selling their products/services without the hassles and cost of their own merchant account. I would recommend to everyone to first go through a 3rd party merchant account system such as 2checkout, paysystems, ccnow and see the response on what they are selling. If they are doing high volume and are very successful then they can look into getting their own merchant account. I think unless you are at least doing $10,000 in sales per month, getting your own merchant account is costly and unnecessary.

We use 2checkout and we really haven't had any problems with their service. It is definitely a great alternative to having a full blown merchant account. With a merchant account, you may have the risk of being blacklisted with credit agencies if you get too many chargebacks (that's what I've heard anyway).
Revecom/Paysystems is really good also -- I've heard many good things about them. The only reason I did not go with them instead of 2checkout was because for awhile there, their servers were down because they had been hacked for awhile. They finally got it resolved, but I lost some trust in them when they were down for that long.

Another vote for 2CO here... although as soon as I have a justifiable volume I'm going to get a Merch Account. Because I'm in Australia, there isn't really anything of the same quality as 2CO/PS etc here. We do have some, but they don't work in the same way.
The only downside is that it costs an arm and a leg to get an Int'l wire transfer unless your payouts are more than $500 or something! I hate receiving int'l cheques :|
